Chapter 14 - Head Full of Steam

Later Tuesday Afternoon, November 17th

Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department

Zanesville, Ohio

Andrea Anderson walked back into the Sheriff’s Department building with a head full of steam. She flashed her credentials at the Sergeant on desk duty and went right to the elevator, not even bothering to sign in.

When she got upstairs, she found Mel’s outer office empty. Hearing voices coming from down a short hallway she knew led to the conference room, she decided to check there for Mel first. When she got to the room, she found Mel, Holly, both of Mel’s detectives, a couple of deputies and a woman she didn’t know, all arrayed around a county map that was laid out on the long conference table.

She caught Mel’s eye first and asked, “What’s going on?”

“Sally Loring is missing.”

“What? Since when?”

Mel moved toward the Deputy DA. “Since early this morning, before the sun rose, as near as we can estimate.”

“And you’re sure she’s actually missing and not just wandered off or something?”

Mel pointed toward the doorway and followed Andrea out. “Yes, I’m sure,” she told the other woman when she was sure they were out of earshot of the conference room. “Her sister Gloria is back there,” she said as she jerked a thumb over her shoulder. “She’s pretty upset already and I’m sensing some sort of attitude from you. Why are you over here?”

“I’ve been going through the Tanner Mathis murder case file.”

“Okay.” Mel shrugged.

“You never told me the murder happened in your grandparent’s home.”

Mel went on the defensive. “It isn’t exactly relevant to the current case but again, okay, my mistake. I guess I figured you knew since you got on me about Dana and my uncle and all.”

“There’s no statement in the file from Eunice, your grandmother.”

“What are you trying to say?” Red crept up Mel’s neck and stained her cheeks.

“Was there one?”

“How the hell should I know? That happened, what, forty-some, maybe forty-five years ago? I wasn’t even a gleam in my father’s eye then. If you’re trying to imply that I removed one from the case file, you can…you can…” Mel trailed off, holding her tongue, thinking better of telling off a woman she might have to work with for the next few years and beyond, if she continued to run for the County Sheriff position.

Andrea took a deep breath. “This is getting out of hand. All I really want to know is, where is your grandmother now? Is she still alive? Can I talk to her or, failing that, a neutral party…not me or you. Devon maybe?”

“My grandmother has been institutionalized for years…more than thirty, actually. She’s not of sound mind and of no use on this case or any other. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a missing person to find that is relevant to this case.” It pained Mel to say it but she went on to tell Andrea, “My focus needs to be on Sally Loring right now and not on my Uncle Owen and all of that.
